Dutch roots masters have a canny knack of getting the best out of singers over a full album as seen on previous LPs by Chezidek (Judgement Time, 2010), Earl 16, Apple Gabriel and Brindley Forde. Chezidek's 2nd set on the label, The Order Of Melchezidek, is a true roots classic, rating alongside his Inna Di Road for Massive B back in 2008 and is as good a vocal LP as I've heard in a long time. Positive, irie humanity vibes throughout.
Its the roots album of the year for me. The song Hail Up the Roots features on Roots N Culture 2013 (above post) but preview the whole album on soundcloud. Main feature here is Royal Order's MASSIVE Selassie Souljahz Megamixfeaturing Chronixx, Sizzla, Kabaka Pyramid, Protoje and some seriouslyheavy versions from Addis Pablo & The Suns Of Dub.
The Rootsmanriddim is revisited, this time showcasing the Iba Mahr, Jah9 &Chronixx cuts. Nuff Chronixx in dub!and he's hitting the UK nextweek! Check his new VDO.Also featuring a rootsy excursion with Ja group on the Izez riddim and tracks by singer Bryan Art from his excellent self-titled LP for ALTAFAAN. Preview it on. Silent Warrioris a killer reality selection by singjay Tydal (Train-Line Records).
Ittakes a few plays to lock itself into the consciousness. Eddie Murphy's remarkable but very catchy Red Light is essential, the surprise of the summer. Singer Jah comes with another powerful reality selection Help For The Youths (Reggaeland) top tune! - Concious Selections 2013. Full time wi stand up against the system. But man still haffi eat.
Jamaican singjay sensation Chronixx start a fyah while rising roots artist Jah9 provides nuff serious reasoning. A pair of big Tarrus Riley hits with Gimmi Likkle One Drop & the killer Kabaka Pyramid combination Fly Di Gate. Bobby Tenna's album Words & Melody builds on his amazing debut set and marks him as an upcoming major talent in conscious roots music. Both albums are out on his own label, check them out.
Singer/deejay Lady Flame also has some fine music out there. She forwards the positivity here on Build Up. 2013 sees a welcome return to form for both Turbulence and Capleton. The Prophet blaze it up here with Meta & The Cornerstones on the Senegalese band's Ancient Power CD. On their Soundcloud page. Jahcoustix & Apple Gabriel come with a deep roots blast against the leaders on Controller, lifted from Jahcoustix's Frequency LP out on.

Next Generation Family's rootsy Raspect riddim is just brilliant and leads with Lutan Fyah's superb Respect & Manners. Another I-light is Reggaeland's Cultura featuring deejay legend Jah Thomas and Singer Jah's Prayer 2 Di Most High which is simply sublime. The Redeemer (OneNess) harks back to the good ole days of rub-a-dub dances with Mark Wonder. Jesse Royal delivers a militant cut to the I'klek'tic (XTM Nation). Great to hear Queen Omega once more. She really shines on the Passover (Jahlight).
Another Maximum Sound rhythm, Leggo Di,has a real early reggae sound. Deejay Captain Sinbad celebrates Jamaica50 here while singer-deejay Ras Demo (aka Demolition Man) come with atop reality tune.
Glen Washington & Mikey Spice contribute twooutstanding conscious songs on Cyclone's Da Drama. Joe Frasier's World Peace is similar to the Full Upand features one of Sanchez's best cultural songs. Together, taken fromthe latest Ras Batch LP Know Thyself, is an illustrious call for unity.A heartical U-Roy combination with Harrison Stafford (of Groundation)reminds me of vintage Eric Donaldson and is from the new U-Roy LP PrayFi Di People. CD1 leads with some killer Ken Boothe before hitting with Carlton Livingstone's massive 100wt of Collie Weed on Volcano's Hot Milk. More tuff riddim like Worries In The Dance, Darker Shade Of Black (Pass The Tu Sheng Peng), Lecturer, I Can't Hide and some wicked cuts on the Shank I Shek.Featuring Ken Boothe, Carlton Livingstone, Scion Success, Michael Palmer, Robert Ffrench, PadAnthony, Barrington Levy, The Viceroys, Frankie Paul, Yellowman, BarryBrown, Charlie Chaplin, Wailing Souls and Al Campbell. Productions fromSly & Robbie, Junjo Lawes, Winston Riley, Jah Thomas, H.
Wrightand Myrie Lewis. Riddim from The Taxi Gang, The Roots Radics and TheI-Life Band. CD2 Prince Jammy is predominant by the end of the year. Riddim like Heavenless, Answer, Drifter, Throw Mi Corn, Stop That Train, Cuss Cuss (including Johnny Osbourne's crucial Rewind), Get A Lick (One In A Million), Love Won't Come Easy, World A Reggae Music (Boom Shackalack) and the mighty Stalag. Riddimsfrom The Taxi Gang, Hi-Times and The Roots Radics. Rocking Time - Selections from the late-70's. Cool & easy revival mixtape made up of rips from my 7 & 12' collection. Incorporates various styles of the day, varying from roots to big people revival vibes. Runs vocals into deejay cut into dub version or blazing instrumentals inna true discomix style. Some real timeless classics here like the Phase One classic rockers cut of Waiting in the Park by the Chantells, Owen Gray's cover of When I Need You or Trevor Hartley's combination with U-brown on Selassie-I. Singer Ras Midas with a dread version of the Paragon's rocksteady hit Same Song.
Ends with a personal favorite of mine, the sublime Going Is Rough by Jimmy London. Roots-Dancehall Selections Volume 2 (1978-84)Don Carlos & IdrenMore classic roots and roots-dancehall hit tunes and rarities inna 12'discomix style with deejay cuts and dub versions. Roots Radicspredominant with nuff Junjo Lawes, Sly & Robbie and Prince Jammyproductions among many others. In many ways the start of the 1980s was an exceptionally good, creative period for reggae music. The move towards a more dancehall-friendly (and less militant) sound began late in the 70s and borrowed heavily from the traditions and rhythms of rocksteady of over a decade earlier.Continuous mix. Total 157 minutes.

Essential early nyabinghi records from Nyah Earth (1970) and Bongo & Bunny. Star Trail Mix - selected by DJ Herbal T. The next helping from the Vineyard Sound selector, this one a tasty serving of Stuart Bell productions from the 1990s.
Bell's Star Trail label put out some of the greatest conscious music of the time and were a leading part of the 'new roots' revolution by the end of 1993 alongside Digital B, Xterminator, Penthouse, JR and countless other labels. Best known for quality relicks of staple dancehall rhythms with a real roots feel Bell also released several great originals, the Burning Bush (Anthony B's revolutionary Fire Pon Rome) & the noble Lift Up Your Head (Everton Blender) being the most successful. He voiced a relatively small number of artists to great effect, Beres Hammond, Garnett Silk, Capleton, Sizzla & Everton Blender in particular, while deejay Anthony B made his name there.
Elevate UR Mind 2012. Lift up your conscience. Features some supa heavy riddim like the Most Royal (Maximum Sound) Happy Trod (Leaf of Life), Butterflies (Xterminator), Sweet Wata (Jukeboxx) and Oneness Records' awsome and mighty Reggaeville. Some seriously catchy versions on this ya one., check Farmer Man byNaptali & Indonesian singer Ras Muhamad. Irievibrations recall deeper roots on Jungle Skunk, with strong performances from messenger Luciano and Anthony B who revisits his Defend Your Own lyric. Resurrect another vintage classic, this time a haunting, minor key version of Red, Black & Green aka The Possessed. Such works further establish the label as the dominant force in UK reggae production, check them on.
